With authors who are both accomplished researchers and educators, Vollhardt and Schore's Organic Chemistry takes a functional group approach with a heavy emphasis on understanding how the structure of a molecule determines how that molecule will function in chemical reactions. By understanding the connection between structure and function, students will be better prepared to understand mechanisms and solve practical problems in organic chemistry. The new edition brings in the latest research breakthroughs and applications, expanded problem-solving help, and new online homework options.

About the Author
K. Peter C. Vollhardt was born in Madrid, raised in Buenos Aires and Munich, studied at the University of Munich, got his Ph.D. with Professor Peter Garratt at the University College, London, and was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Bob Bergman (then) at the California Institute of Technology. He moved to Berkeley in 1974 when he began his efforts toward the development of organocobalt reagents in organic synthesis, the preparation of theoretically interesting hydrocarbons, the assembly of novel transition metal arrays with potential in catalysis, and the discovery of a parking space. Among other pleasant experiences, he was a Studienstiftler, Adolf Windaus medalist, Humboldt Senior Scientist, ACS Organometallic Awardee, Otto Bayer Prize Awardee, A. C. Cope Scholar, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize Holder, and recipient of the Medal of the University Aix-Marseille and an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Rome Tor Vergata. He is the current Chief Editor of Synlett. Among his more than 350 publications, he treasures especially this textbook in organic chemistry, translated into 13 languages. Peter is married to Marie-Jos Sat, a French artist, and they have two children, Paloma (b. 1994) and Julien (b. 1997).
Neil E. Schore was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1948 and educated in public schoolsin the Bronx, New York, and Ridgefield, New Jersey. He completed a B.A. with honors in chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. Moving back to New York, he worked with the late Professor Nicholas J. Turro at Columbia University, studying photochemical and photophysical processes of organic compounds for his Ph.D. thesis. He first met co-author Peter Vollhardt in the 1970s when they both were doing postdoctoral work in Professor Robert Bergman's laboratory at Cal Tech. Since joining the UC-Davis faculty in 1976, Schore has taught organic chemistry to more than 15,000 nonchemistry majors, winning seven teaching awards, publishing over 100 papers in various areas related to organic chemistry, and refereeing several hundred local youth soccer games. Neil is married to Carrie Erickson, a microbiologist at the UC-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. They have two children, Michael (b. 1981) and Stefanie (b. 1983), both of whom carried out experiments for the new Seventh Edition of Organic Chemistry.

I Really Do Not Like Vollhardt
By Marcus Landry
The following is an excerpt of an email that I wrote to my professor so that he could forward it to the organic chemistry department at my university. Context: I am currently an undergraduate student pursuing microbiology and biochemistry, and I am near the end of organic chemistry two. I performed well in the first course (A-) and we will see how the second semester goes. Anyways;
"Upon entrance to organic chemistry 2510 I was prompted that the required text would be Vollhardt 7th edition organic chemistry book. Now in most college courses that I have taken, approximately 116 credit hours worth at this point, the required text has been an invaluable tool to further classroom instruction and to elucidate complex concepts, my experience with Vollhardt has been far from that. My issues with Vollhardt are the following:
1) The end of chapter practice problems are conceptually useless.
- I often liken the end of chapter practice problems to brute force hacking. The problems pursue mastery of subject material by leading a student through a very tedious process of performing all the possibilities for a certain reaction type via exploration of its properties via 2-3 various reagents. The student is then lead to perform this same process for another three questions, often a-I (~9 sub questions) using other reaction conditions. This would not be an issue save for the fact that there is no elegance in this process, Vollhardt opts for repetition to instill chemical knowledge effectively beating the dead horse. This is not the organic chemistry that I know, organic chemistry is an elegant science with explanations deeply rooted in the conditions surrounding the reagents or within the orbitals of the reagents themselves. These kinds of insights are missing from Vollhardt, therefore students are rewarded for their ability to memorize reactions rather than their ability to analyze them.
2) Mechanistic descriptions of reactions are effectively missing from Vollhardt.
- Yes, there are "mechanisms", but rather than providing clarity to a foreign reaction schemes they prove to be a lesson in madness. Between the missing reaction conditions (solvents, temperature, time, etc...), ubiquitous utilization of kekule/condensed form hybrid structures, awkward color coding, and a severe lack of arrows, there is more time wasted on deciphering the hieroglyphics proposed by Vollhardt than time actually spent analyzing and applying said reaction schemes.
3) There is no organization to concepts in the overarching chapters of Vollhardt.
- Reading class material should not require flipping over a hundred pages in order to read two different chapters pertaining to aromatic substitution or of carboxylic acid chemistry. Rather than having the various topics concerning these subject as disparate as three to four chapters it would be more logical to arrange topics so that they build upon each other in linear fashionchapter to chapter. Not from chapter 22 → 16 → 18 → 21 → 19 and etc... Fiction books are allowed to hop around ideas, but when reading about dense scientific topics linearity is conducive to efficient reading strategies.
Now I have listed a few of my issues with Vollhardt's 7th edition organic chemistry book, and I can personally attest to at least a dozen other individuals voicing the same concerns that I have voiced in my previous statements..."
I have done every single practice problem and read every chapter from Ch.1 to Ch. 14, since the second semester started I have yet to touch the book and have decided to use Klein's Organic Chemistry as a Second Language 2016 edition. I honestly feel more confident in my learning via this route than I ever did using Vollhardt. Also, these thoughts are my own and not my professors or my university's.

Great book, solution guide separate and necessary
By Jaycie
This is a great book, only downside is you have to buy the solutions guide that lists at $71 in addition to the book if you want the answers. The in-chapter questions have answers, but the end of chapter questions, which account for about 95% of the problems. The book has great explanations and is easy to learn from, especially with lecture as well. The problems are very helpful to learn the content.

By Abi
The only disappointing thing about this book is that you have to buy the solutions manuel separately. I went to my school's library to check my answers in their copy. :)
