It is better than nothing
By JCarter
This is the official pocket Havamal that the military uses, which is why I chose this specific version as my "travel Havamal." However, I am not a fan of the Benjamin Thorpe translation as I find it difficult to understand and a bit confusing. The prose is also a bit rough, not as poetic as other versions. As such, it is not the helpful travel companion I was hoping for. Still, it is better than nothing.

For everyday reading and studying purposes I recommend the Auden and Taylor translation, but I also love the Olive Bray version because it is very poetic and I prefer the way it sounds. If you are looking for a straightforward translation that puts things into modern, basic terms then I recommend the Patricia Terry version.

Great little book to own
By Steve Onorato
I already own several versions of the Havamal, but I bought this one for the sole purpose of always having it with me. As a Forn Sir practitioner and sworn devotee of the All Father, I find it convenient to have his words as a guide in daily life, especially in the modern world. I would recommend this book to any follower of the old ways.

Love it!!
By Tina LeBouthillier
This is a perfect little book! It is pocket sized - 5.8 x 3.9 x 0.3 inches - handy to carry with you anywhere. There are three different covers (I got three of the black cover) and well formatted with a good-sized font for reading. Some extra pages in the back for your own notes too! It will be a great stocking stuffer and such a reasonable price that you can afford to get a few to donate to a raffle. This book is one of the things that people are always mentioning with the phrase, "Wouldn't it be a good idea if someone did this!" And it's Amazon Prime, so you get it fast with no shipping cost if you are signed up for Prime. Thank you Carrie - nice work!!! I will be getting more of these.

Review
"Mario Puzo collides with Norman Rockwell in a compelling tale of past crimes and present consequences" (Max Allan Collins (Road to Perdition))"

From the Publisher

That got him a lot of attention from some people he thought he'd escaped long ago. The kind of people who never forget a face--even after twenty years...

Now Tom must confront a group of cold-blooded mobsters intent on settling the score. As much as he tries to deny it, he's a man with a history of violence--and with the lives of his family hanging in the balance, he'll do anything to make sure his secret past stays buried...forever.END

He can't run, he can't hide; but he CAN fight.
By Church of The Flaming Sword
Looking ever so forward to the David Cronenberg-directed adaptation of _A History of Violence_ to arrive at my local theater, I found it of the utmost exigency to buy the 1997 graphic novel that inspired it. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint one bit.

_AHoV_ tells of a small-town Michigan diner owner named Tom McKenna. McKenna is a nice guy with a loving wife, an adorable preschool daughter, and a quirky but still likable teenage son. Life is just one uneventful day after another - just as Tom likes it.

Until one day that should have been like every other, two thugs with robbery and murder on their minds enter Tom's diner for the first (and last) time. The hoodlums decide to push their luck until Tom is forced to kill one and badly injure the other. The press catches wind of the incident of course. While Tom is hailed as a hero by his friends and neighbors, he does whatever he can to downplay his newfound fame. It doesn't work.

Shortly after the failed robbery attempt, three mobsters from New York City come to the diner. All three of them have rap sheets with just about everything on them except broadcasting without the expressed written consent of Major League Baseball. Johnny Torrino, the leader of the three, is an aging assassin with failing eyesight looking for someone named "Joey", whom he needs to settle a score with. Torrino wears a necklace with a Joey's severed finger as a pendant. Mckenna, curiously enough, is missing one of his little fingers. Soon, it becomes evident that McKenna lived another life before settling down to small-town family life.

What makes _AHoV_ stand out from all the "edgy" graphic novels on the shelves is how it reads more like a great crime novel than just another graphic novel. It has a cinematic atmosphere that feels like what would happen if Martin Scorsese and Sam Peckinpah were to collaborate on a film. Make no mistake about it, this is one grisly read. Even with the borderline minimalist black and white artwork, the violence elicits more than a few cringes. Characters are either done in with or injured by bullets, axes, chainsaws, axes, power drills, etc. Take that "Suggested for Mature Readers" label seriously here.

But even with all the bloodshed, there is plenty of heart here as well. Tom and his family are presented as people just trying to keep their heads above water when faced with an unexpected and hostile situation. Tom does everything he believes he can do to keep his family of danger. You can't help but feel for the McKennas.

I love everything that _AHoV_ represents. There are no super"heroes" who are more attitude than personality, no superheroines who look like Playboy centerfolds, and no absurd comic book cliches. It's just a nice little (albeit graphically violent) tale of how the average American is anything but. For all those aspiring comics artists and writers trying to figure out how they are going to reinvent Superman the 16,549th time, read _AHoV_ and learn something new.

You Have a Gun in Your Face--What Do You Do?
By Ian Fowler
As other reviewers have noted, David Cronenberg's movie adaptation of "A History of Violence" will be released at the end of the year. This is the primary reason I picked up this graphic novel tha I passed on when it was first published. I'm glad I did pick it up, because John Wagner and Vincent Locke have crafted a gut-wrenching story of violence and revenge that transcends its lurid subject matter.

Wagner's premise is simple. Tom McKenna, husband and father of two, is closing up his diner when a couple of killers attempt to rob and murder him. Tom foils them, killing one in the process. Naturally, he receives a great deal of publicity, which he seeks to avoid. In short order, some very tough looking types come around looking a guy named Joey, a guy, it seems, who resembles Tom, right down to missing a finger. What follows is a hard-boiled tale in the best tradition of Ross MacDonald or Jim Thompson, as Tom finds his past catching up to him, and trying to eat him and his family alive, while Tom does everything in his power to beat that monster back (including killing a few people).

John Wagner is a British comic book writer, most remembered as a co-creator of Judge Dredd. That early work shows to some extent. "A History of Violence" is, well, violent, often appallingly so, as Tom is witness to, and himself inflicts, all manner of cruelty upon human beings. However, Wagner imbues his work with a soul. Tom and his wife, Edie, are good people, and Wagner makes it clear that whatever Tom has done, he has paid his dues. He deserves his happiness. That is underscored by the appalling antagonists Tom fights. Wagner further makes it plain that for Tom to win the final showdown, he still has to pay one last due.

Vince Locke's art is an interesting moody and sketchy style. It is highly detailed on the one hand, and yet his line work has an almost surreal quality, reminiscent of a woodcut. While it goes without saying the acts of violence are vivid (and almost difficult to view at times), Locke also depicts the more mundane aspects of the McKennas' lives, underscoring the everyman quality of Tom and the essentially average existence he leads.

Cronenberg has admitted in interviews that he did not know that the script for "A History of Violence" was originally a graphic novel until he and the screenwriter had gone through several drafts. Still, the advance reviews are good. The key to a successful translation of this GN to film is maintaining the central point: you have a gun in your face-what do you do?

I got this one after seeng the movie "based" on it - for Mature Readers only
By Kcorn
I'm glad I got the book, which is actually a very graphic comic book that goes far beyond the film version which is "based" on the book. This book is far superior to the film, in my view, although it is so graphic that I was wincing at parts of it. Imagine whatever weapon you want - chainsaws, drills, guns, knives...and you'll find them being used in this story. The drawings are very...detailed...and my tolerance wasn't as high as it should have been to handle all that blood and gore, at least not in illustrations. I prefer to read about stuff like that. Visuals can be too intense for me.

Still, don't let me scare you off. This book was not only believable but had integrity and heart, in its own violent, grisly way. I have to admit there were times I wished I was simply reading words on a page instead of having the images thrust in my face (this may also be the reason why the film sometimes seems "watered down" compared to the book, which is so graphic that it might have turned off film audiences).

You won't find any superheroes like Batman or Superman in this book. It is the type of comic that represents real life, starting with a guy, Tom, who seems to have a pretty low key life in a very small town. He runs the diner. He's barely on anyone's radar screen, apart from the people he knows in town and his wife and kids. He has a reputation for being a decent guy, even a better than average guy with a generous heart...but he's not particularly ambitious and he certainly isn't out to make waves. In fact, he PREFERS being out of the limelight - for reasons even his own family wouldn't suspect.

Everything changes when a couple of lowlifes come to town and try to rob him. He's forced to protect himself and those in the diner and he does so with amazing skill. Even so, no one suspects that this is particularly unusual, except for the fact that this type of crime doesn't usually happen in their town. So he's the hero of the local (and even the national) media for awhile and then it seems that things will die down.

Except that they dont...and in the process, Tom is forced to examine his entire life, going back to a childhood which wasn't always so peaceful, to hidden parts of his past...and he also puts his family in danger and tests his marriage and his wife's trust.

Gritty and realistic
By John D. Costanzo
More historical fiction than fantasy, you will not find any magic swords or sorcery in this gritty and realistic story of Guenevere and Britian after the death of Arthur. When the story begins, Guenevere is already middle aged, and Britian is on the brink of chaos. As the story progresses we learn of the maturing of Guenevere as a person and as a queen.
The novel starts off fast and furious with battles and betrayals. Then it settles down into a serious character study as it builds towards a strong and satisfying climax. Sometimes slow, but always interesting, this was worthwhile reading.

One of the very best portraits of Guinevere
By strega2
This is a worthy sequel to the exciting "Firelord." It tells the story of the rest of Guinevere's life after Arthur's death, and she is even more of a vivid and strong personality than she was in that enthralling novel. Godwin's account of her captivity as a Saxon slave, and her adaptation to that way of life, is purely imaginative, but who could mind? It relates a sensitive and entertaining account of how this proud queen grows to maturity in her adjustment to a jarring change in her fortunes. Guinevere has never seemed more real, alive and captivating than in these pages. You can well believe that a woman this remarkable has captured popular imagination for 1500 years. Someone, please--put this book back into print! It deserves it.

Interesting and unique portrayal of Guinevere!
By CoffeeGurl
A few months ago, I read a novel called Queen of Camelot by Nancy Mckenzie, a recreation of the King Arthur story that centers on Guinevere. I thought that the retelling was very interesting and showed Guinevere as a flesh and blood, three-dimensional, kind woman and not the treacherous, adulteress that is shown in the original story. Beloved Exile, however, shows quite a different take on Guinevere, one of an ambitious, treacherous woman that would do anything for survival and to rule as queen with results as interesting as the one in Queen of Camelot. Guinevere is the Medieval/fantasy Scarlett O'Hara in this retelling. After King Arthur dies, Guinevere, along with Lancelot and Gareth, tries to bring Camelot to its previous glory, but things don't turn out that way, to say the least. Instead, she becomes a Saxon slave, and her struggles has just begun. But Guinevere is an intelligent, scheming woman, and she will do just about anything to reign again. There are various twists throughout the novel.

Beloved Exile takes quite a departure from the original King Arthur tale and the results are incredible. Parke Godwin gives Guinevere the sort of depth and layers that is absent in King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. And the anti-heroine here is also a departure from Queen of Camelot. Both of these novels show a very interesting portrayal of Queen Guinevere in very different ways and I cannot decide which one is the best one of the two. In this adaptation, Guinevere is an unsympathetic protagonist, but has enough complexity to make her compelling at the same time. That is why I compare her to Scarlett O'Hara, for she made me feel the same way when I read Gone with the Wind. This Guinevere is very interesting indeed. I just loved the complexity and many dimensions of this character. Mr. Godwin has created a wonderful and unique portrayal of this classic character. And he added gothic undertones to boot! I cannot recommend this gem enough!

View the botanical prints of Poiteau who was a gardener to the King, a member of the Seine region's Royal Agriculture Society, Chief Gardener of the Royal Chateau of Fontainebleau and Versailles, Editor of Bon Jardiner as well as the Director of culture and royal habitation in the French Guiana.

Poiteau was also a self-educated man, the son of a poor farmer. He loved botany and sought to improve himself throughout his life, often embarrassed by his shortcomings. He endured remarkable hardships. He often fell sick from the hard labor of his father's profession. This did not discourage him.

He learned French and Latin at 25 years of age and decided to learn to draw at the age of 31 since he felt he expressed himself poorly. He thought you were never to old to learn. So he learned to draw in Santo Domingo from Turpin, another famous botanical artist, and Poiteau taught Turpin how to identify plants. The friendship lasted a lifetime.

Enjoy this remarkable man's prints and explore his life.

Neglected gem of Fichte's popular works
By E. M. Dale
This is a review of the importance of this work by Fichte, not the translation, which is more or less accurate to Fichte's German.

The Characteristics of the Present Age belongs with Fichte's popular works, for they were given publically and were intended to work out the implications of his transcendental idealism for practical matters such as history and politics. In this, these lectures serve an analogous function to Hegel's own lectures on the philosophy of history (given as college lectures and not public talks per se), though Fichte's lectures have never served as popular introductions to his speculative philosophy, as Hegel's lectures on the philosophy of history did for his thought. Indeed, Fichte's Characteristics of the Present Age have suffered from benign neglect in the non-German speaking world; while the various editions of the difficult and even byzantine Wissenschaftslehre are studied regularly, Characteristics is relegated to obscurity as an idiosyncratic statement on historical necessity by a philosopher about to be eclipsed by younger, more radical thinkers such as Hegel. Collingwood (1994:108) sums up much of the scholarship dealing with Fichte's philosophy of history: "The chief difficulty which a reader finds in dealing with Fichte's view of history is the difficulty of being patient with what appears so silly," though he does not think that this verdict is completely warranted, and for good reason. For just as Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre is widely recognized as the most important link in the development of idealism from Kant to Hegel, so is Characteristics the single most important link between Herder's romantic appropriation of the philosophy of history from Voltaire, and the full flowering of philosophy of history in Hegel. Herder provided the impetus for looking at historical ages as actual histories which had value in and of themselves; Fichte is able to take these histories, more specifically the history of his own time, and infuse them with a universal philosophy which, though Herder had warned against such all-encompassing systems of thought, was able to perfectly catch the Zeitgeist of the emerging nineteenth century political and philosophical ferment. Though it remained for Hegel to make the philosophical understanding of history truly philosophical in a way that his contemporaries would embrace, Fichte is the first important post-Kantian philosopher to offer a comprehensive system of history and philosophy which attempts to come to terms with both actual history, and universal philosophical claims.

The Garden of Heaven: Poems of Hafiz (Dover Thrift Editions), by Hafiz

"Hafiz has no peer." —Goethe
Poetry is the greatest literary form of ancient Persia and modern Iran, and the fourteenth-century poet known as Hafiz is its preeminent master. Little is known about the poet's life, and there are more legends than facts relating to the particulars of his existence. This mythic quality is entirely appropriate for the man known as "The Interpreter of Mysteries" and "The Tongue of the Hidden," whose verse is regarded as oracular by those seeking guidance and attempting to realize wishes.
A mere fraction of what is presumed to have been an extensive body of work survives. This collection is derived from Hafiz's Divan (collected poems), a classic of Sufism. The short poems, called ghazals, are sonnet-like arrangements of varied numbers of couplets. In the tradition of Persian poetry and Sufi philosophy, each poem corresponds to two interpretations, sensual and mystic.
This outstanding translation of Hafiz's poetry was created by historian and Arabic scholar Gertrude Bell, who observed, "These are the utterances of a great poet, the imaginative interpreter of the heart of man; they are not of one age, or of another, but for all time."

About the Author
Peter Avery OBE, was born in Derby, England, in 1923. One of today's most eminent Persian scholars, he was for years Lecturer in Persian Studies in the University of Cambridge where he still lives. His works include A translation of The Ruba'iyat Of Omar Khayyam, with poet John Heath-Stubbs, and The Speech of the Birds, the Mantiqu't-tair of Faridu'd Din.

Gertrude Bell (1868 1926) was an adventurer, scholar, linguist and British intelligence officer. Bell's courageous travels in the Islamic world of the Middle East in the late nineteenth century offered some of the first Western understandings of the culture and people of the lands of modern-day Iraq and Iran. Her translations of the poems of Hafiz are still considered by many scholars to be the most faithful of any in the English language.

Gertrude Bell vs. Daniel Ladinsky
By A. Windsor
I'm troubled (though not altogether surprised) by the previous reviewer's criticism of Gertrude Bell's translations of Hafiz by comparing them to the work of Daniel Ladinsky. I'm troubled because Daniel Ladinsky is not a translator of the poetry of Hafiz. Daniel Ladinsky writes all-new, all-original English-language poems but publishes them under the name of Hafiz rather than taking direct credit for them himself. But I'm not altogether surprised by the previous reviewer, because Daniel Ladinsky's poems are far more popular in the United States than the actual poems of Hafiz, and most people who read Daniel Ladinksy's poems are under the mistaken impression that they're reading translations of Hafiz.

Gertrude Bell's translations may leave something to be desired. But at least they're actual translations of Hafiz.

A remarkable woman Gertrude Bell, and this book a great service
By Daniel Ladinsky
I wanted to address -- an arrow here one of these reviews shot into me, the one dated August 5, 2009. But before that I want to say: I have bought several copies of this sweet publication over the years. And I feel Dover has done a great service in giving us this. And for any not aware of what a remarkable person Gertrude Bell was, they might enjoy searching some info about her on the web.

This book, "The Garden of Heaven," was very helpful to me at times with developing "My Portrait of Hafiz," as I sometimes refer to my work with him, and wrote an essay with that title I posted amongst Readers Reviews at Amazon ... under "The Gift, Poems by Hafiz," a Penguin publication. That essay/review is dated April 18, 2005.

For any wanting to make some reviews about my work (like the one by A. Windsor) more of a fair fight I would suggest they read two essays about the "Genesis" of my work with Hafiz that appear in my latest Hafiz effort, titled "A Year With Hafiz." One of those essays is called, "Releasing the Spirit of Hafiz." I would also point any sincerely interested in the foundation -- and inspiration -- behind my poetry publications to the October (2013) issue of The Sun magazine where they did an extensive interview about my Hafiz and Rumi work, and work with some of the greatest poet-saints in recorded history. That interview (which was totally unsolicited by me), i thought, asked some very direct and hard-hitting questions.

I love these words attributed to Hafiz:

"No one could ever paint a too wonderful
picture of my heart or God."

That seems to be the great task with Hafiz -- to reveal the grandeur of words, and to make tangible the Grace, the vital food, that can be in real poetry. Poetry at its height is the Sun speaking -- and lifting us up into its arms, if only for a blessed moment. A great, great thanks to any who help Hafiz do that. And he can. Indeed.

OK for the price
By James W. Ramsay
The Gertrude Bell translation doesn't exactly speak to the modern reader, but it is the classic. It is more complete than the Bly and Lewisohn translation, which is translated into more modern English.

The Techno-Human Condition, by Braden R. Allenby, Daniel Sarewitz

In The Techno-Human Condition, Braden Allenby and Daniel Sarewitz explore what it means to be human in an era of incomprehensible technological complexity and change. They argue that if we are to have any prospect of managing that complexity, we will need to escape the shackles of current assumptions about rationality, progress, and certainty, even as we maintain a commitment to fundamental human values.Humans have been co-evolving with their technologies since the dawn of prehistory. What is different now is that we have moved beyond external technological interventions to transform ourselves from the inside out -- even as we also remake the Earth system itself. Coping with this new reality, say Allenby and Sarewitz, means liberating ourselves from such categories as "human," "technological," and "natural" to embrace a new techno-human relationship.

Review

"[A] valuable book" -- Andrew C. Revkin, Dot Earth- A New York Times blog

" The Techno-Human Condition will infuriate some, be dismissed out-of-hand by a few, but will unsettle almost all readers. The reason is, that while Allenby & Sarewitz's analysis of current problem solving is a bitter pill to swallow, there is an underlying understanding that their approach is not only correct but also essential to embrace. The book is a fast-paced, easy read. I couldn't put it down." -- Leonardo

"An important, provocative, and wide-ranging volume on the role of technology in our rapidly changing Anthropocene-era world. Essential reading for anyone interested in Methods to Shape the Future, World Futures, Security, Sustainability, and science/technology in general... a stimulating and timely book." -- Michael Marien, Global Foresight Books

"A smart, articulate, and even witty investigation that avoids derailing into either the utopian or the dystopian. If the best is enemy of the good, The Techno-Human Condition is the good at its best." -- Richard Rhodes , author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Making of the Atomic Bomb

"The Techno-Human Condition is first a cogent description of modernity from the perspective of a technological worldview and second a prescription for our problems through a rejuvenation of key Enlightenment precepts. The authors have clearly outlined how and why we are facing a fundamental cultural crisis precipitated by 'wicked complexity,' and this book is a clarion call for radical adjustment. I predict it will become a touchstone for reorienting our thinking about techno-society and the need to reconsider how global problems are faced by industrial societies." -- Alfred I. "I loved this book! I literally couldn't put it down! It made me think about the broad implications of my own research. My program is now to think about the issues the authors raise, and then to re-read the book in light of those musings. I just wish I could have the authors in my living room for a few hours (or days) to probe the issues they raise." -- Wm. A. Wulf , University Professor, University of Virginia; President Emeritus, National Academy of Engineering

goooood
By Amazon Customer
Look, this is a well read and well thought out book, well researched with an astonishing new proposition (see: chapters two and three).

I used this book to write a term paper in favor of posthumanism. One (of many) of the issues: Surely, by turning ourselves into cyborgs, we lose our souls, our essence, the thing that makes us human...

And so this SEEMS to be the focal point of the debate. Braden and Allenby take an ENTIRELY different approach. VERY Good long-weekend read.

too long at 200 pages
By S. Walsh
Allenby and Sarewitz raise some interesting and important points; however, the first few chapters promise more than the later ones deliver. Long before the end, the basic arguments have been repeated so often and in such unappealing jargon that this reader's patience wore very thin. The authors also have a number of annoying tics, such as their constant Enlightenment-bashing, which probably gets them points in some regions of academia but which otherwise comes across as mere name-calling. With some editing, this might have made a good long article or series of articles, but there's not really enough material for a book. Three stars because the last chapter, "The Museum of Human Frailty," is moderately amusing.

A hard look at human intellectual frailty
By Judy Granny
This is an almost painful look at how enlightenment thinking has brought us to the soup we are in regarding the environment, warfare, healthcare, air travel, all those areas where our great problem-solving skills have failed us because we fail to see the consequences of our solutions, and that as mere humans are unable to foresee. So what is the answer? "The courage and wisdom to embrace contradiction, celebrate ignorance" (yes I got that right) "and muddle forward (but intelligently)."

So where does that leave us? Mostly with a lot of questions and arguments and doubts about what we believe most. "Individuals bear an individual responsibility for contributing to ethical dialog, because to fail to do so is to rob the system of its pluralistic wisdom."

Instead of charging ahead into the next mess, we need to seek alternatives and listen to all points of view. A perfect example of thinking with blinders on is the mad dash into genetically modified organisms that has carried us into a danger zone worse than quick sand. This is a difficult book, but one that everyone serious about our common future on this planet needs to read.
