An audio book that I could not leave in the car. We had to finish it immediately in the house.

We listened to this book on a day trip that ended up taking a lot longer than expected. It was spellbinding from the very beginning. When we got home, we couldn't stop listening, and had to bring it into the house and continue listening to the very end. I haven't listened to another book that was so compelling.

The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in modernism or minimalism on housing and who desire to improve the residential detil design to be more insighfully clean and blight. In itself this is a beautiful book. The book contains sixteen, excellently crafted homes with superb photography. The houses are organized into 4 categories: Timber, Steel, Concrete, and Masonry. The drawings (building/wall sections, plan details) are very clear and reveal some hidden truths. The book also contains three short essays (Single family house: Myth and Reality; A Small House with a Garden; The Image of the House) that are equally as inspiring.
Yes, these are high-end, avant-garde, mostly European homes as the previous reviewer has pointed out. But, Isn't this the type of book us more conventional architects should be getting our inspiration from? Perhaps some of these elegant details and constructs could trickle down into conventional residential practice, even speculative housing. If every residential architect were to study these types of details and enlighten their clients, I'm sure the quality of the built environment would improve. Let's broaden our horizons.

Avant garde European houses

The drawings are exactly like the ones in Detail magazine, which means Americans might have occasional trouble translating some of the terminology, but the presentation is top quality. Features cutting-edge designs that are the stuff of architectural journalism: shed roofs, floor-to-ceiling windows, natural wood slat siding, and, my favorite, a house built with two-foot-thick sand-lime brick cavity walls. Not your average homes; then again, no reason to compile them into a book if they were.

The two sections cover "Life and Youth" and "Popular Culture" (which looks at everything from advertising to the visual arts). The book ends with a time line and a helpful list of products and their costs. While there is useful material here, much of it gets lost in the meandering and sloppy writing. Candace Bergen is referred to as Candace Bergman, and the WNBA receives little more than an aside in the approximately 350 words devoted to women in sports. Too verbose to be a ready-reference title, but too bland and lacking in analysis to be of any value as a history, this awkward hybrid lumbers along guaranteed to alienate even the most resolute researchers. Marc Oxoby received his BA from San Jose State University and now lives in Reno, Nevada, where he is a doctoral candidate in the University of Nevada, Reno English Department. He has worked as a disc jockey and as the editor of the small-press literary journal CRiME CLUb. He currently teaches English and Humanities classes at UNR. A regular contributor to the scholarly journal Film and History, he has also written for several other periodicals, as well as for The St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture and The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers.

Este es un relato genial de la tragicomedia que es vivir en USA, lleno de historias jocosas en que con su humor negro, el autor relata el dolor de sus humillantes y brutales trabajos fisicos que contrastaban fuertemente con la vida comoda que tuvo en su pais natal. Este libro es una perfecta descripcion de los que es para un latino entrar al reino Americano del acelere y la ansiedad.

Excelente libro. Altamente recomendable. No se lo pierdan los que han vivido en USA y quieren recordar lo que hemos vivido en este pais, o los que desean viajar para que puedan saborear un poquito de lo que les va a tocar en USA.

Best book on Camp David to Taba

Whilst there have been a number of books on this topic such as Enderlin's Shattered Dreams, Swisher's The Truth About Camp David and Dennis's Ross's verbose recollections in The Missing Peace, Gilead Sher's book is by far the best.

Filled with details of every meeting, discussion between Israelis, Palestinians and Americans, it fills in the missing details as to the motives and positions of the principal players in the negotiations. It reveals that the reason for the breakdown in the negotiations was complex and multi-causal, not simply a case of "exposing Arafat's face" as has so damagingly been popularised in Israeli and Jewish circles.

As Israel approaches a new round of final status negotiations after a break over six years, the Israeli government should have a good read of Sher's book for instruction. The time for wishful thinking regarding a final agreement is over - an agreement in the spirit of the Clinton parameters remains the best resolution of the final status issues, which as Sher sets out the Israeli government accepted, subject to minor clarifications over six years ago.

Wish you could be fly on the wall of the Camp David negotiations? Now you are

Yes, it's a history book. Yes, it is written by someone who was there, in the room, rather than by an author who merely interviewed participants. The answer is "yes" to all the questions which make this book a must read.

But, where this book distinguishes itself from dry historical accounts is that the author puts you right there. You are in the room with the key players. One is made to feel like the proverbial fly on the wall. The author, paints a word picture that leaves one smelling the cigars, the food, the tension, the fatigue of all night negotiations, and the emotional whipsaw of being inches from the finish line - the elusive peace.

A dry historical account it is not. The author fleshes out each of the key players. One comes to know their personalities and personal agendas. Their personalities come to life and evolve from two dimensional newspaper caricatures to three dimensional complex figures.

For one, such as myself, who started with the belief that a Palestinian/Israeli peace agreement is a fantasy, it is a strange journey to the truth. Peace, even if a cold peace, we come to learn, was, and still is, more a question of political will, driven by public perception, than it is an issue of security, borders, settlements, demographics, rights of return, and Jerusalem.

Gilead is my brother, so naturally, I am not objective, then again, knowing him personally, I can attest to his unyielding honesty, extraordinary analytical brightness and deep commitment to a fair solution to the Palestinian Israeli conflict.

Refelecting these qualities, "Within Reach," a best seller in Israel, and published illegally in the Arab Press, provides a fascinating insight into the overt and covert negotiations, detailing the Israeli and Palestinian positions on the core issues of the conflict -- Palestinian Refugees Right of Return, Jerusalem, Settlements, Security and Territories, Water. It recounts the ups and downs of the negotiations, the "players" personalities, the decision making process and the proposed solutions, which will no doubt serve as the blueprint for any future negotiations.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Israel, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and most importantly, in the parameters of a possible agreement for the End of Conflict.

Interesting premise, but somewhat disappointing

Being both a fiction writer and historian, Emma Donahue has compiled a book of short stories based on events and people she came across in her research. In many cases all she had to work with were one or two sentences, a name, or a rather fantastic story. So she took it upon herself to create the stories and characters that might be behind these brief bits of information.
It's an interesting idea, and the actual writing is flowing and poetic, however, the majority of these stories ultimately disappointed me. Sometimes it's because her stories are a little too obvious, as with the title story. If you are going to write about a woman who is reported to have given birth to rabbits, and you want to give a logical explanation, a scam is about the only explanation you can come up with. THe only room for creativity is in why these folks decided to try it and how they came up with it, both of which I found to lack much depth.
The greatest shortcoming, however, was in the length of the stories. When the main purpose is to develop a character behind a bit of news, it requires far more words. THese stories were more on the order of short shorts. Yet because they were based on actual events, the surprise endings and plot turns required to make a short short work, are not here. Therefore the reader is ultimately left unsatisfied and wondering why the story needed to be written in the first place.
Oddly enough, the only story that appealed to me was the last one, Looking for Petronella. This story was quite a bit longer than the others and had more depth. The plot was also a lot more creative. It was almost as though the author needed to build her momentum to reach this point.
All in all this is not a bad read, but nothing I need to keep on my bookshelf.

If you ever wondered...

...what the lives of others were like, the others being those figures in history you may have heard or read about, or perhaps just a no-name other, then this is the book for you. Ms. Donoghue finds snippets of information about historical women and crafts a little larger snippet of life for them. The stories are not long, and I feel justifiably so. These are just tastes, just notions of what life might have been like. They are dreams, creations on a whim to explain the life of a woman so very long ago in England.
Ms. Donoghue's writing is wonderful. It has a musical quality, shows its humor and tenderness, greed and hesitation. Her imagination is rich and deep, and her research astounding for such small stories.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that I would easily recommend.

Rabbit Tales

Such an amazing short story collection - Emma Donoghue's historic fiction is gorgeously written. As a historian, Donoghue has stumbled upon brilliant sotries of extraordinary women lost over time. These seventeen vivacious tales take us back through the last few centuries in England and Ireland, fleshing out personal accounts discovered through lost letters and archives.

The first story, "The Last Rabbit" is an excellent build up for the entire collection. Donoghue narrates the experiences of Mary Toft, who in the 1700's tricked her Irish town and half of London into believing that she could give birth to rabbits. While medical experts tried to desperately to disprove the hoax, Mary suffers the indignities of being a medical marvel, suffering embarrasing examinations from an assortment of "birth experts" and speculators. Her own comentary practically relates childbirth to a form of prostitution, which makes sense that in the last scene she discovers that she has been taken to a brothel to give birth to her rabbits. Marriage, childbirth and the historical low status of women take up most of the storylines. In "Acts of Union", a syphallis infected soldier is tricked into marrying an apothecary's spinster-niece. Though the soldier certainly sees himself a victim, his bride seems to have settled for worse, but is left knowing that this is her only opportunity to marry.

There is a certain richness to Donoghue's writing, dealing with religious and social misogyny. Her heroines are strangely tough, vulgar and sometimes shrewd, but there is a undeniable dignity to them. Later characters include a cult leader, a wheel-chair bound woman who leads rescue teams for drowning sailors and a pregnant countess convinced that she'll die during childbirth. One added bonus is that each chapter includes the historic contents of the protagonists, lists the articles and letters that the author used in her research. Not only are the stories based on some reality, but they feel very real. You can not doubt that you have learned something.

THE WOMAN WHO GAVE BIRTH TO RABBITS is an amazing piece of literature. Historical fiction has never been a big interest of mine, but Emma Donoghue has changed that with this one book.
