An extensive general bibliography is complemented by lists of further reading for each chapter and a glossary defines critical and technical terms, making the book accessible for those coming to the field or to a particular approach for the first time.

In this second edition there are four entirely new chapters; contributors have revisited and revised or rewritten seven of the chapters to reflect new thinking, while the remaining three are classic essays, widely acknowledged to be definitive.

Review
The specialized material, introductory approach, and plenitful bibliography would make this an excellent text for a graduate course in children's literature. Approachable but noy jargon-laden, this volume could give students of nearly any critical preference a jump-start into their own research.
–Bonnie Gaarden, edinboro university of Pennsylvannia, American Literature, March 2002

The bibliographical utility and survey of the strengths and weaknesses of various critical approaches are sure to make this an influential text in the teaching of children's literature..
–Canadian Literature, Summer 2002

Unnecessarily Complicated
By Kristine
This is not a soap box, so I'll try to get to the point quickly. I get that there are hidden agendas and meanings behind poetry, children's movies, and I guess even children's literature. There are biases from the author that kids will subconsciously pick up on. But this book was unnecessarily complicated. I literally could not understand the messages trying to be conveyed from any of the chapters. I can somewhat understand the hidden meanings behind children's literature if I care to read it for more than the surface story, but I could not understand this book trying to help me understand children's literature. Too much academic jargon and not enough getting to the point (something children's literature is good at!)

Generational change at work
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Peter Sheahan is interesting, entertaining and informative. One of his objectives in this book is to inform (or remind) managers that generational change in the workforce brings with it differing values and perceptions about what matters to employees. In order to harness the talents and get the best from our Gen Y co-workers, we need to understand what they might value and appreciate the differences.

Writing as one of the baby boomers who is edging towards the end of a particular phase of working life in an area where highly educated and motivated Gen X and Gen Y predominate, I think it is essential to appreciate the differences. For Gen Y workers in particular, if they are not finding job satisfaction then they will quickly move on. This has enormous impacts for organisational and workforce planning - especially in areas of highly skilled work in fields where demand for workers currently outstrips supply. It also means that we need to pay significantly more attention to the `people' factors of management.

While Peter Sheahan's book focuses specifically on Gen Y, it invites the reader to consider the differences between the generational needs of workers. This is already a challenge in a tight skilled labour market and will only increase in a labour market such as Australia's where the workforce is ageing and the demand for skilled labour is increasing.

I don't agree with every point Peter Sheahan makes, but I certainly agree that my generation of managers needs to pay far more attention to these factors than we have in the past.

And thanks to one of my Gen X colleagues for making me aware of this book shortly after it was published. It may have been enlightened self-interest, it was certainly illuminating reading.

Recommended reading for managers, supervisors and leaders.

Generations at Risk presents compelling evidence that human exposure to some toxic chemicals can have lifelong and even intergenerational effects on human reproduction and development. The result of a collaboration involving public health professionals, physicians, environmental educators, and policy advocates, this book examines how scientific, social, economic, and political systems may fail to protect us from environmental and occupational toxicants. It is an important sourcebook for those concerned about their own health and that of their loved ones, as well as for medical and public health workers, community activists, policymakers, and industrial decision makers.

Humans and ecosystems in the United States are subject to potential exposure to more than 75,000 synthetic chemicals, most of which are poorly tested or untested for human health effects. The authors focus on classes of chemicals that people may be exposed to at work, at home, and in their communities. These include toxic metals, organic solvents, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors. In addition to providing scientific information with which to assess the health risks of many chemicals, the book provides a guide to the current regulatory system and resources for action.

From Library Journal
This is a handbook on the toxicity of chemicals in our homes, communities, and workplaces and their effects on reproductive health and development. The authors are public health workers, physicians, policy advocates, and environmentalists. The text is arranged in three sections: an introduction to human reproductive systems and areas vulnerable to damage; a comprehensive review of metals, organic solvents, pesticides, and endocrine disrupters in our food, air, and water and the dangers to human reproductive physiology caused by exposure even in small quantities; and an analysis of the regulatory agencies and legislation designed to protect public health and the weaknesses and failures of those approaches. Strategies are presented for assessing environmental threats in our daily lives and taking action to minimize or eliminate them. The book's scholarly presentation, which includes statistics, illustrations, tables, anecdotal information from actual cases, and 60 pages of references, is most appropriate for an audience with some understanding of scientific terminology and research methods. properly informative
By Akira Touya
this book is as information-dense as one could hope for. it seemed as non-biased as it is possible to be considering the subject of the book and the authors' intentions in writing the book. it goes into much detail regarding different reproductive toxins and how and why they affect humans and animals. it also explains the different damages the chemicals effect. in the latter part of the book it also explains the regulatory system in the united states of america and how it is in parts beneficial and detrimental to the effective regulation and safe use of the discussed chemicals.

Generations at Risk is a perfect blend of science and advocacy. Not just for the more technically minded reader, it addresses not only comprehensive reviews of chemicals and their effects, but includes the rationale of policy makers, industry, and the public. Excellent desk reference of history and science for anyone concerned with the dangers of chemical exposure.
