The first edition of this highly successful book appeared in 1975 and evolved from lecture notes for classes in physical optics, diffraction physics and electron microscopy given to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The book deals with electron diffraction and diffraction from disordered or imperfect crystals and employed an approach using the Fourier transform from the beginning instead of as an extension of a Fourier series treatment.
This third revised edition is a considerably rewritten and updated version which now includes all important developments which have taken place in recent years.

I have nothing but praise for this book. There is something in it for every physicist, not the least of which is the unifying process the author sets out to achieve.

Manditory reading for the serious electron microscopist

This book develops the Cowley-Moodie multislice approach to electron diffraction, beginning with the the Kirchhoff integral as applied to Fresnel diffraction. Cowley refers to this theoretical technique as the "Physical Optics" approach--an apt description given the fact that he models the diffracting crystal as a stack of atomic planes (or slices) where each atomic plane acts as a Fresnel lens. I once asked John Cowley how he came to envision such an approach--and his reply was that it was "obvious". Well, what was once obvious to John Cowley may not be obvious to rest of us, so a good bit of preliminary study is in order before tackling this book. Accordingly Cowley recommends a good book on Fourier Optics as preparation for reading his book, with Goodman's text as an example. I did indeed find that Goodman's text provided the necessary groundwork.Introduction to Fourier Optics In addition, however, I should add that a good general understanding of Fourier transforms is needed as well--and for that reason I would also recommend Bracewell's book on that topic.The Fourier Transform & Its Applications
I should mention that other aspects of diffraction are also discussed in this book, including a good introduction to the Bethe's dynamically theory of electron diffraction (i.e the Bethe matrix/equation) as well as insight into diffraction from polymers.

Tough reading

The author of this passed away several years ago, and I was one of the few privileged enough to work with and publish with John M. Cowley. As one of the leaders in the field of electron microscopy, it is to be expected that he publish a textbook in the field. I received my copy from him personally in the summer of 1997, and spent the next year or so reading through it. The book is quite advanced, and should not be attempted by someone without a strong undergraduate training in physics and mathematics. The text is written for those who already have some knowledge of the subject, and I would not recommend it for someone new to the subject of diffraction or microscopy. As a textbook, it is appropriate for graduate students, and is well done in that the sample problems can be finished without the need of a computer. Overall, an OK book from a great author.
